Blue Helium Sky

A Cappella Caterpillar

No one liked his singing
serenading the apartments
with songs a little off key
pushing the neighbors
to a groaning cacophony.

They could hear his melodies
through the thin walls and responded
with imitations of loon
calls as a critique
of his mind deemed out of tune.

In the morning, the Beatles
harmonized from this insect
with a voice small and lowly –
warbling with a zeal
his Kafkaesque Karaoke.

A cappella caterpillar,
A cappella cater pillar –
living life as a half rhyme
somewhere along Highway 99.

And it was a symphony
without strings in the afternoon,
as he aped Sinatra,
a slow moving bug
in the rug waiting to cha cha.

But then one day, he crawled
under a door and was crushed
by a foot that did not care,
turning his vocal
to an operatic nightmare.

A cappella caterpillar,
A cappella caterpillar --
living life as a half rhyme
somewhere along Highway 99.
